Online Plus Offline Isn't New.
The AI Part Is.

Everyone's talking about the "new retail model" again. Strip the phrase down and only one element is actually new — AI. Online-plus-offline has been the goal for years. The real question isn't China's model; it's how many Malaysian SMEs are ready for the one new part when most never finished the last one.

Strip the phrase down

Everyone in retail is talking about the "new retail model" again, because China's retail reforms just put it back in the headlines. Before we get excited, strip the phrase down.

Online plus offline is not new. Merging your storefront and your shop into one business — same inventory, same customer, one experience across the screen and the shelf — has been the goal for years. We even have a name for it, O2O, and it's old. That half of "new retail" is not news.

So what's actually new? AI.

One thing. Intelligent retail — demand forecasting, pricing, content, customer service, all run or assisted by AI — is the genuinely new element layered on top of the online-and-offline base everyone already knows. When you hear "new retail model," that is the part to pay attention to. The rest is vocabulary.

The question that actually matters

And it has nothing to do with China. How ready are Malaysian SMEs for the one new element — when a large share of them never finished the old one?

Short-video and livestream selling have been mainstream for years — not experimental, not a bet. Yet plenty of Malaysian businesses still have no TikTok Shop, no live-selling habit, no content engine at all. They never built the online layer. And AI, the new element, sits directly on top of it.

The layers compound

That's the trap. You don't get to skip. AI removes work you're already doing online — it forecasts the demand you're already tracking, drafts the content you're already posting, answers the customers you're already talking to. If a business isn't online-native in the first place, there is nothing for the AI layer to stand on.

You can't bolt intelligence onto a shop that still runs on a paper order book and a WhatsApp catalogue. The new layer doesn't close the gap for the unprepared — it widens it.

Finish the step you're on

So I'd tell any SME owner reading the "new retail" headlines two things: don't chase the whole slogan, and don't be fooled into thinking most of it is new. Only the AI part is — and you can't reach it by jumping.

Get onto the platforms you're not on yet. Build the content and live-selling habit — badly first, then better. Get digital enough that real data exists. Only then does AI have something to act on, and at that point it stops being a buzzword and becomes leverage.

The one line to keep
The only new thing in "new retail" is AI. Most of us are still skipping the step right before it. Close that first — the AI layer waits for no one, but it also can't run on nothing.

If you're staring at these headlines unsure which step you're actually on, I'm happy to talk it through — no pitch, no package, just a candid sharing session between people building in this market.

Now or Never.
